MANCHESTER, England - Dejan Lovren grabbed a late equalizer for Southampton in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Saturday, adding to the champions troubles in a lacklustre start to their English title defence. Robin van Persie put United ahead in the 26th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Wayne Rooney had a shot blocked. But Southampton, one of the surprises of the league this season, troubled United throughout and claimed a deserved point when Lovren bundled in a corner from James Ward-Prowse in the 89th. United slipped eight points behind early leader Arsenal in what is proving to be a tough start to life at Old Trafford for new manager David Moyes, whose team lost 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion in its last home league game. The last time Southampton was in the north of England, Croatia defender Lovren scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at Liverpool to end the then-leaders unbeaten start to the season. The visitors started this game in the top four and wont be too far from the top of the table come the end of the season on this evidence. For United and Moyes, though, the problems continue. At times, they were outplayed by Southampton, with Van Persie and the ineffective Rooney being well shackled. Eleven points from eight games is a poor return for a club the size of United, which won the league by 11 points last season. Hours after signing a new five-year contract with United, Adnan Januzaj was handed another start and another chance to enhance his burgeoning reputation. The Belgium-born winger couldnt repeat his exploits of two weeks ago, when he scored twice in Uniteds come-from-behind win at Sunderland, but it was his incisive pass that led to Van Persies goal. Januzajs curling through-ball to Rooney put the England striker through, but his first-time shot was saved by Artur Boruc. The ball rebounded out to Van Persie, who rounded the goalkeeper and placed the ball to the side of the sprawling Lovren, who was covering on the line. In the second half, only a brilliant one-handed stop from Boruc denied Januzaj a goal following a swerving shot from 30 yards. Uniteds other best chance came soon after the goal, when Rooney smashed a volley against the crossbar. Otherwise, Southampton gave as good as it got in a further demonstration of the teams progress into perhaps a side that could challenge for a European place for next season. The visitors passing and movement, particularly in the first half, was impressive but there was a lack of cutting edge up front, with England striker Rickie Lambert only introduced off the bench just before the hour. Italy striker Dani Osvaldo wasted Saints best early opportunity, when he sidefooted straight at goalkeeper David de Gea after Rooney was dispossessed deep in Uniteds half. De Gea also had to produce a smart save with five minutes left from Nathaniel Clyne but he was denied a clean sheet when Lovren beat Phil Jones to an inswinging corner and prodded the ball home. nfl give away price jerseys. (Sports Network) - Brewers right-hander Shaun Marcum takes aim at his fifth straight winning decision this evening when Milwaukee visits the Los Angeles Dodgers for a two-game series. In his first season with Milwaukee after spending his first five seasons with Toronto, Marcum hasnt lost since his Brewers debut on April 2. He is 4-0 in seven starts since, though he is coming off arguably one of his worst games of the season last time out. The 29-year-old gave up season highs of five runs and nine hits over six-plus innings, though he didnt walk a batter and struck out eight to take an 8-6 victory. The offense bailed me out tonight, Marcum said. My command was on early but it got away from me in the seventh. Marcum, who won five straight decisions from May 2-28 of last year with the Blue Jays, has a 2.72 earned run average on the season and is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers. Milwaukee heads out west following a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh, good enough for the clubs longest winning streak since a season-best four-game run from April 9-14. Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy both homered and combined to drive in seven runs in Sundays 9-6 victory. Casey McGehee also homered, while Braun has driven in 10 runs over a five-game hitting streak. Zack Greinke got the win, Milwaukees sixth in eight games, despite allowing five runs over five innings. Braun will look to stay hot tonight against Dodgers starterr Jon Garland, who he is 2-for-5 against in his career with a homer and four walks.dddddddddddd Garland, meanwhile, is just 1-2 with a 3.66 ERA in five starts this year, with the Dodgers going 1-4 in that span. Garlands last official appearance was a no-decision versus the Mets on May 7, though the 31-year-old righty did threw two no-hit innings versus Pittsburgh on Thursday before the game was rained out after a delay of two hours and 22 minutes. Garland has had success versus Milwaukee in his career, going 3-0 with a save and 2.15 ERA in six games, including four starts. The Dodgers are hoping for a sharp outing from Garland after losing Sundays rubber match of a three-game series with Arizona, 4-1. It was Los Angeles second straight setback following a three-game win streak. Ted Lilly gave up back-to-back homers in the second inning and was charged with four runs over six frames overall. Jamey Carroll scored the Dodgers only run on an Aaron Miles single in the third. Ted changed speeds and kept them off balance. He kept us in the game, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. We had chances, but we just couldnt crack through. Andre Ethier went 0-for-4 to end his streak of reaching base safely at 37 straight games. The Dodgers have won four straight versus the Brewers, with the last three victories coming in Milwaukee. Los Angeles did lose two of three at home to the Brew Crew last season, getting outscored 25-16. ' ' '
